About Mauricio Handler
Mauricio Handler is an underwater photographer of
International regard. His body of work emphasizes his
ongoing passion with unspoiled destinations and their
unique marine wildlife.
For many years, Mauricio has been a National Geographic
Underwater Photography assistant, working with the
best in the business including David Doubilet and Brian
Skerry. His nine assignments with the magazine have
taken him to many corners of the world where he has
collaborated in some fascinating stories. He has photographed
Humpback whales in the Silverbanks, Blue holes in the
Bahamas as well as the reefs of isolated Cuba. He has
worked with Spotted Dolphins in the Bahamas and the
North Atlantic as well as Sperm whales and Tuna in
the Azores. In addition, his images from Fiji, The
Galapagos Islands, Cocos Island and Great White Sharks
off Guadalupe have gained him International recognition.

Diving, Sport Diver, Men’s Journal, Islands Magazine,

Mr. Handler teaches
digital as well as film based underwater housed SLR
systems workshops in many exotic land based destinations
as well as aboard the finest diving vessels worldwide.
Many of his students return year after year in what
has become one of the industries most complete and
intense teaching weeks for underwater photography.
During these workshops Handler emphasizes the creation
of original images using simple as well as elaborate
lighting techniques combined with a true understanding
of the fine art of image making. The latest in digital
technology and techniques is also brought to the forefront
of every workshop week.
He is the author of two books,
Diving Guide to the British Virgin Islands, (Lonely
Planet) as well The British Virgin Islands A Photographic
Portrait (Twinlights Publishing). He is also a Contributing
editor to the US premier diving magazine, Fathoms and
has a regular column on Ocean Realm.
He is the Technical
Field Advisor to the Montreal based underwater housing
manufacturer, Aquatica and is a member of The American
Society of Media Photographers (ASMP)
His images are

In the Film realm his preferred tools include Nikon F5 35mm, and the Mamiya
RZ Pro II 6x7 medium format film cameras.
In the digital front he uses he Nikon D2x exclusively.
For all his work he uses Nikkor and Mamiya lenses exclusively.
His custom underwater housings are by Aquatica and his arms by Technical Lighting
Control. He prefers the warmer tones of
Ikelite strobes, but is now also using the very compact
and powerful Inon Z240. His diving gear is by Scubapro
and his diving suits by XS Scuba and his dry suits
are by Whites.

Mauricio is the only photographer invited to return

and Amos Nachoun.
This International exhibition
